Gomphotherium - Reconstruction
Gomphotherium is a now extinct member of the Elephant line. Gomphotherium fossils have been found on the North American, South America, European, Asian, and African continents. It’s unclear as to whether Gomphotherium diverged from the lineage of the Mammoth and modern elephants or if it is in fact their direct ancestor. Gomphotherium remains have been found in association with ancient human settlements and the last of the Gomphotherium are thought to have become extinct as the worldwide ice sheet retreated at the end of the Ice Age.
